I feel like Killarney House & Gardens is one of Killarney’s best kept secrets. When people talk about visiting Killarney, you’ll hear about the park and a few of it’s top spots like Torc Waterfall, Ross Castle, and the Gap of Dunloe (which are all great). But you’d be hard pressed to find someone sharing their visit to the house at the start of the park.
Picture this: a beautifully restored 18th-century manor house with rolling gardens that stretch as far as the eye can see, all set against the stunning backdrop of the park’s famous mountains.

Killarney is a town rich in history, and Killarney House is no exception. This beautiful estate has a long and fascinating past, intertwined with the history of the Earls of Kenmare, who once called it home. The Killarney House that you see today isn’t the original structure. The original house (located in a different part of the park) was a massive French-style chateau.
But after a fire destroyed it in 1913, the current (and more modest) house was built from a renovated stable block. It’s smaller, yes, but it doesn’t lack charm. And after a recent restoration, it’s more stunning than ever.
When the estate was passed over to the Irish government in the late 1990’s, the house and gardens were left neglected for years. But thanks to extensive restoration efforts, they’ve been lovingly brought back to life and are now open to the public—complete with a visitor center that tells the story of the house, its history, and the people who lived there.
Step Into the Gardens
The gardens are designed in a formal style, with perfectly manicured lawns, flower beds bursting with seasonal blooms, and neatly trimmed hedges that give the space an almost fairytale-like atmosphere.
Wander along the meandering paths, and you’ll find secluded seating areas where you can just sit and take it all in—the birds chirping, the flowers gently swaying in the breeze, and the absolutely beautiful vistas of the mountain range in the background. As someone who lives in a flat area, I couldn’t get enough of the mountain views! 😍
One of the highlights? The Cherry Blossom trees. When they’re in full bloom, it’s an absolute dream. The sweet scent fills the air, and it’s the perfect spot for a little stroll—or let’s be real, for taking a million photos.
If you’re lucky enough to visit during spring or summer, the gardens are a riot of color. But even in autumn or winter, they have a quiet and peaceful beauty all their own.
Killarney House Special Exhibit
So what really blew me away when visiting Killarney House was the nature exhibit that’s located upstairs.
Truth be told, I hadn’t planned on visiting the house at all because 1) Ireland has a lot of older estate homes to tour and I had already been to a few, and 2) I’d never heard anyone mention that it was a destination to check out (IYKYK – everyone always talks about Muckross House) so I just never thought of it.
But one morning, I was walking along a path from the Knockreer entrance and a man – a local worker who noticed I was a tourist – was passing me and politely suggested that I give the house a visit and to make sure to go upstairs. He said it offered a gorgeous view of the park and mountain range and had a whole exhibit up there about the nature.
Well, I’m so glad I did! It’s so well put together, it rivals any museum exhibit from a major city (to be honest, I enjoyed it better than the natural museum I visited in Dublin).
It’s all about the natural landscape of the area, including the flora and fauna. If you’ve got little ones, definitely stop in. If you love nature or history (or are just a nerd like me and love a good museum exhibit) definitely stop in.
Also, while I was roaming through, I ended up speaking to two women who were from the area. One of the ladies shared loads of information of the park from her perspective growing up there. It was really interesting to hear how things have changed over the years in Killarney, and you could tell she just really loved where she was from. It really added to my visit, and the locals are just an amazing group of people 😊
